In AutoCAD you can apply notes to your drawing in various ways. You can type your notes, insert text from other sources, and copy notes that repeat through a drawing.

You can create single line text - TEXT,  and multiline text, - MTEXT. You can also edit and style text.

In this chapter you will learn how to create single-line text and multi-line text , to control the size, type style, font style and orientation of text.

  • Create single-line text (TEXT)
  • Create multiline-text (MTEXT)
  • Editing text
  • Text styles

2.1.1 - Create Single line TEXT

Text is the basic command to create text, it creates a field any where you click on the screen, into which you can type any text you need.

Notice that in single-line text, each line is an independent object that you can edit, move, copy, or erase any of the lines without affecting the other lines.

To create single-line text:

  1. Click Home tab ► Annotation panel ► Single Line Text
  2. Command prompt says: TEXT Specify start point of text or[Justify Style]: Left-click anywhere on your screen to define the start point of text.
  3. Command prompt says: TEXT Specify height[0.20 ]: Enter a new height if desired, say 0.25, and press Enter. (This prompt is displayed only if text height is set to 0 in the current text style).
  4. Command prompt says: TEXT Specify rotation angle of text[0]: You can rotate the text, but for now just type 0 and press Enter.
  5. A text field opens up with blinking cursor, go ahead and type the first line First floor - Bedroom, press Enter once to go to the next line, and type Wall material: Brick , press Enter once to go to the next line, and type Total room area = 15 m2 and then press Enter twice to finish (Fig.1.2.1.1).

Notice that in single-line text, each line is an independent object that you can relocate, reformat or otherwise modify.

Notice that the text is on three separate lines, each line is an independent object that you can edit, move, copy, or erase any of the lines without affecting the other lines.

A multiline text (MTEXT) object includes one or more lines of text, that consist paragraphs, and can be manipulated as a single object. You can create a multiline text (MTEXT) by entering or importing text. Before entering or importing text, you define the area where the text will go. You specify the opposite corners of a text bounding box that define the width of the paragraphs in the multiline text object.

Command prompt says: TEXT Specify opposite corner [ ]: Move your mouse down and across to the right, a rectangle with an arrow appears, continue to move the mouse to make the rectangle -text field- as large or small you need it to be to hold all the text, and click again when you have define  the field.
  4. A text editor tab will appear on the screen, where you will type your text, type the first line and press Enter to go to the next line. Continue and add four more line as shown in Fig.1.2.1.3. To finish up, press click anywher outside the text field.

If you click on mtext you created, you will notice that it remains a paragraph (not single lines), a big difference from a single-line text.

2.1.3 - Text Style

Any text in a drawing has a text style associated with this. When you enter text, the program uses the current text style, if you have not created your own text style, AutoCAD has as default the Standard text style.

The current text style sets the font, size, obliquing angle, orientation, default height, and other text characteristics. You can create your own text style, where you set text characteristics you want, and make it current.

Now you'll create a text style called Custom-Standard, which you'll use to add notes to the drawings of your project house99 on which you've been working:

To do this:

  • Click Home tab ►on Annotation panel click the arrow icon acad icon textStyle 30 the Text Style Dialog box will open (Fig.1.2.0.0).
